Obituary:  Judith Kimber (B: 13/05/1945   D: 12/06/2010  Reading, Berkshire, England)

We are really sad to announce the news of the death of ‘our’ Dashper descendant and researcher Judith Kimber.  She was a superlative investigative researcher. Her records were meticulous, all cross referenced, and superbly archived with attention to every detail and double-checked for accuracy.

Judith’s grandmother was Lilian Maud Dashper.  She was born Judith Christine Meincken in 1945, and married Peter Kimber in 1969. They lived in Reading, Berkshire, which was her base for numerous excursions to records offices and genealogy centres.

Judith (aided by her husband Peter) will be remembered by many from our Dashper family reunion of 2005, as pivotal to the huge success of the international gathering. She was on the organizing committee, research committee, a presenter, and financial coordinator, but her 'coup de grace' had to be the huge chart she and Peter erected around the entire wall of the conference room, that linked up all the lineages of Dashper for all to see. This chart was magnificent, and represented hours and hours of loving attention. But as she saw, it was much more than this, as it brought everyone together for the first time - probably in the entire history of the Dashper family, as a union of branches.

This came with a price (literally). Judith spent a small fortune on birth, marriages, and death certificates over the years, many miles of travel back and forth between genealogy records offices, not to mention the hundred upon hundreds of hours of analysis.  We have so much to thank Judith for, and the worldwide Dashper family will miss her enthusiasm.

Judith will be forever remembered for her devotion and passion that we have all benefited from in so many ways.  Her funeral is on Tuesday 22nd June, 2010.  She is survived by her husband Peter,  children Andrew and Anne, and grandchildren.

Obituary:
Richard Paterson Dashper  (B: 29/10/1928
  D: 22/08/2009  Warkworth, New Zealand)

Richard Paterson Dashper passed away recently. He was 80.

Warkworth, New Zealand lost a well known identity recently. Richard Dashper, known by many as Tricky Dicky,  passed away after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, on 22nd August 2009 at his home in Goatley Rd.  Well known for his trademark spider he wore in his beard, and the friendly disposition and unique sense of humour he shared with many of the locals in his town, his contribution to the community will be missed.

Richard was farewelled at a service in his local Christ Church Warkworth, and he was cremated.
He is survived by his wife Madeleine (married for 57 years), and son Mark.  His other son Julian sadly passed away three weeks before Richard’s death.

Obituary:  Julian Philip Dashper  (B: 29/2/1960   D: 30/7/09  Auckland, New Zealand)

Julian Philip Dashper passed away in Auckland at the age of 49, from melanoma cancer.

"Julian Dashper had a work called Curriculum Vitae. His biography and list of exhibitions would be pinned to a gallery wall, taking more space each time. That vitae part ended on July 30, but the curriculum bit will continue being added to, as people assess the achievement of one of New Zealand's most consistent and challenging artists."

Dashper turned "himself into an international artist based in New Zealand. That meant travel and residencies building up relationships with artists, galleries and collectors. He also took on limited teaching work, treating students as future colleagues and opening them up to the power of ideas. It meant ideas that could travel and not burn up the budget in freight costs.
His growing international recognition culminated in a retrospective which toured three state galleries in the American Midwest. " (from NZ Herald Obituary: Adam Gifford)

Julian Dashper is survived by his life partner and fellow artist Marie Shannon and their son Leo. He was cremated after a large and very moving service celebrating his life, at his old boyhood church St Andrews, Epsom, Auckland.

Obituary:  Douglas Raymond Dashper  (B: 1928 in Birmingham   D: 31/10/2005)

Ray passed away on Monday 31st October 2005 after a sudden illness and a diagnosis of lung cancer. It has been a shock to the family and two of his daughters had just returned from abroad in time to be with him. Ray had been an inspiration to everyone and at the recent Dashper Family Reunion we can recall him directing us to the war memorial in Tavistock.

We all thoroughly enjoyed talking to Ray at the reunion, and are very sad to think that was the last time we will ever see him. We saw him as as a happy, peaceful and thoughtful man who was excited to meet all the relations worldwide, and contribute to the global knowledge of our family.

Ray Dashper

Ray's  full name was Douglas Raymond Dashper but he liked to be known as Ray.  Ray was the son of William Henry Dashper and Louisa Dones. He had six brothers: William Dones Dashper , Lawrence Norman Dashper,  James F Dashper,  Philip Henry Dashper, Stanley G Dashper,  Dennis B Dashper, and one sister Mollie Winifred Dashper. Ray married Miss Marriott 1949 in Derby. They have four children: Gillian P Dashper, Carol A Dashper,  Pamela J Dashper and  Rebecca Louise Dashper. Our sympathies go out to all his family.

Addition to War Memorial Tavistock: Sapper F Dashper (B: 2/9/1877 D: 19/8/1919)

The death of Frederick Dashper in the First World War was not previously acknowledged on the War Memorial in the town center of Tavistock where he had lived.  This was noted at the May 2005 Dashper Family Reunion, in a visit to Tavistock by a small number of Dashper relations from the organising committee. Sapper F Dashper was in the Royal Engineers and died aged 41 on Tuesday, 19th August 1919. He was the son of the late William and Eliza Dashper; husband of Harriett Grace Dashper, of 46, Crelake Park, Whitchurch Rd., Tavistock. He is remembered with honour at the Tavistock New Cemetery, Devon, United Kingdom.  Frederick Dashper's son also died in the second World War.

We are pleased to be able to announce that after correspondance with the Tavistock Town Council and the immediate family,  the name "F. Dashper" has now been added in September 2005.  The Council are to be thanked for the addition, and we are pleased that Sapper F Dashper's supreme sacrifice has finally been acknowledged on the memorial.

Obituary:  David Verrent Salsbury  (B: 21/10/1933  D:25/10/2004)

It is with great sadness that we report that Dave Salsbury died 25th October.  His daughter Thea tells us that Dave had his birthday at home but became very breathless at the end of the day. He went into hospital late Thursday night and passed away peacefully early evening. The funeral was held at St Marys Church Plympton 2004 at 1.30pm, and from there he was taken to the Weston Mill Crematorium. Dave is survived by his three children Jonathan, Michael and Thea, and grandchildren Melissa and Alexander.

Dave was one of the founding members of our Dashper Committee, and we owe him for  his ability to do investigative research and to his uncanny knack of ferritting out information and finding data. Many of the Dashper Xfiles are testimony to this. Dave's Dashper Database on the Ancestor Search, and many of the genealogical searches that each of us have benefitted from, were the result of his keen genealogical abilities.

Many of our Dashper Committe members had never actually met Dave, but remember him in these short tributes, and in these words Dave  . . . we salute you and will miss you:

"I am  stunned at the moment and feel a great loss although I have never met Dave. I was so looking forward to sharing a drink of Newfie Screech with him as I had promised.  I am sure Judith and Chris (other committee members) are most affected by this sad news as they both have spent time visiting with Dave and sharing many laughs together.  Cancer is a awful disease as almost every family has witnessed and I send my deepest sympathies to Dave's family.  He will be with us in spirit and our memories for a very long time." (Linda Etty: Canada)

"I can remember Dave for all the qualities mentioned, and also his joke emails that he used to send me. In particular the ones that he knew I would not understand . . . just to tease me.  Lovely chap.  Like you I never met him."  (Chris Jones: UK)

"Although I never met Dave face to face, we all felt quite close to him via the internet from our first contact, because of his wonderful sense of humour, his selflessness and his dedication to Dashper research.  Dave sent me a tape of his barbershop chorus which I most enjoyed. One of the songs 'From the first hello' must have been his favourite as it was mine when I sang barbershop. I recall the poignant line 'From the first hello to the last good-bye . . .' and think of Dave. (Gloria Beek: Canada/Florida)

"I think there are very few in our extended Dashper family who have not been touched by his sense of humour, his fine research abilities, and tenacious capacity to sniff out and find information where we could not. I personally owe Dave a few pints for special effort above and beyond the call of duty, and will be drinking them in his memory at the reunion that he had such a pivotal part in helping to organise." (Mark Dashper: New Zealand)

Lyn and Mark Dashper at Christs Church Warkworth,

Mark and Lyn Dashper with Julian Dashper

Mark and Lyn were married in a beautiful ceremony at Christ Church in Warkworth, New Zealand on Saturday 3rd July, 2004.  Mark’s brother Julian Dashper was a best man along with Rudy Whitehead-Lopez, and over three generations of Dashpers were involved in the ceremony, which also featured original music specially composed, and live performances from three groups of musicians.  Bridesmaids were Waimarie Dashper and Julia Lockwood, and the register was signed by parents Richard and Madeleine Dashper, and Leslie Clark. The couple were met at the church by a stretch limousine, where they treated the children with a luxurious ride before returning to the reception at the bride and groom’s new home. Mark and Lyn celebrated their honeymoon in the picturesque Bay of Islands over the next week.  The couple actually met over 46 years ago as children, and both families have had regular contact and friendship over the years. Many have remarked that the wedding was a fairytale come true, and their respective children give them a ready-made family.

Obituary: Vera Dashper   (B: 25/6/1911  D: 20/5/2004)

We are all sad to hear of the death of Vera Dashper, who died on 20th May 2004.  She almost made it to her 94th birthday, and her end was very peaceful with family around her. She was the last Dashper of her family, and she was a descendant of the William and Agnes Dashper line. Her children carry the name Burton (the name of her first husband). She had recently moved from Plymouth to be nearer to her daughter Priscilla and her husband, and was only a few miles away from son Joe and Caroline. She was still living on her own in sheltered accommodation, a great feat for someone of her age to look after and cook for herself.  At the last count she had 5 children, 12 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.

Her daughter-in-law Caroline Burton writes “Mum was quite excited about the Dashper reunion although she felt she could not travel back to Plymouth for it. She did hope to see someone of her extended Dashper family sometime during your visit.”

They did not have any children. The service was attended by relatives, including her first cousin Jack Dashper and his mother Esther Ruth Dashper. Family Reunion:  USA descendants of Polly Dashper

The Reynolds/Rohr/Neff reunion will be held this year for the first time in 60 years. This family, many of whom are direct descendants of Polly Dashper through her son Watson Reynolds, will renew and gather new friendships on June 22, 2002 at Jackson's Mill State Park, WVA. This reunion was held on a formal basis throughout the twenties and thirties up to the outbreak of WWII.     Now, for the first time since those reunions, these clans will once again gather to celebrate their ancestors. Much of this is the result of reconnecting through the internet and the rediscovering of families. It is expected that a lot of the discussion will centre on the work that is being done on family trees, and many of those discussions will include the surname, and the excellent research work done by Doug Desper.

Award: Andrew Dashper

Awarded the "Brian Cruciano Lineman of the Year" University of Windsor, Lancer Football

A physically dominating specimen, Andrew Dashper's presence on the field invokes fear into the hearts of quarterbacks. His ability to penetrate the offensive line is second to none as is evident by the number of sacks and assisted sacks Andrew has racked up over his five year career as a Lancer. It is obvious why the Lancer players, coaches, and support staff have voted Andrew the Lineman of the Year.

Helicopter pilot who rescues man in dark hailed as hero

07-19-2000
(Canyonville-AP) -- A helicopter pilot who manoeuvred through trees in the dark to save a 25-year-old man from a South Umpqua River canyon is being called a hero.

Bert Sertain was jumping from a 30-foot cliff into a deep pool at Deer Lick Falls last Friday. But he lost his footing and fell backward onto the rocks. Mercy Flights of Medford was called to fly the man out of the remote area 28 miles east of Tiller.

H. Dashper Wood III flew the Timberland helicopter through 100-foot cliffs of the canyon and manoeuvred through trees to land the helicopter on a rock. U.S. Forest Service officer Dale Walker says he's never seen anything like it. He called Wood's actions heroic.
